    Etymology: If νειόθεν, νείατος, νείαιρα are at all cognate with νειός, νειός (sc. γῆ, χώρα), it must have meant prop. *'lying low, lowlying plain'; the meaning `fallow land', which is also possible for Homer, but not compulsory (rather `field, plain' ?), could rest on the early connection with νέος `new'; cf. Lat. novalis, -e `fallow land'. -- Except for the ending νειός \< *νειϜός can be identical with a Slavic word fur `field', e.g. OCS njiva (with dark nj-), Russ. níva f., IE *neiu̯ó-s (Slav. -ā secondary); Fick BB 1, 335f., Schulze KZ 27, 603f. (= Kl. Schr. 373f.). If we separate a formantic u̯o-element, we can connect the IE adv. *ni `low' in Skt. ní etc.; here a.o. OHG ni-dar `to below', OE neowol `slanting' from * ni-wol (cf. νει-Ϝό-ς). The writing νη- in νήϊστος, νήατος is not convincingly explained. As old lengthened grade, esp. in a superlative, is very improbable, the η must be secondary. Hypotheses in Seiler Steigerungsformen 110ff., esp. on Νήϊται πύλαι; s. also WP. 2, 335 (= Pok. 313: η = closed ē from ει before palat. vowel?). On the Slav. words s. also Vasmer s. níva, with other explanations. -- Cf. also νέατος s. νέος.

The same is true of βαπτίζεσθαι εἰς τὸν Ἰορδάνην Mk 1:9 and νίπτεσθαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν J 9:7; these expr. look like exx. of the interchange of εἰς and ἐν, but were orig. formed on the analogy of X., Cyr. 1, 3, 5 ἀποκαθαίρει τὴν χεῖρα εἰς τὰ χειρόμακτρα= lit. ‘into the towels’; cp. Basic meaning: `region where the sun is below', or `left side of someone who prays when turning to the east'. Another formation in Arm. ner-k`-in `the one below' (cf. i nerk`oy, i nerk` ust `(from) below'). Diff. again is Skt. naraka- `hell' (Wackernagel-Debrunner Ai. Gramm. II: 2, 150).     Origin: IE [Indo-European] [174] * bhudh-m(e)n- `bottom'
    Etymology: Formation like λιμήν, ποιμήν (Schwyzer 522, Chantraine Form. 174; not productive). Except for the suffix πυθ-μήν agrees with Skt. budh-ná- m. `bottom, ground, foot, root', IE * bhudh-. Also morphologically these words can be brought together, if one derived budh-na- from * bhudh-mn-o- (the m was soon lost). In Germ. * bhudh- became PGm. * bud- (seen in OE bodan, MLG bōdem(e) etc.); then, after mn \> n, * bud-n- became * butt- \> bot(t)- according to Kluge's law (seen in OE botem \> Engl. bottom), ONord. botn); we also find evidence for PGm. * buÞ- (OHG bodam, OS bothme, ME bothme) which is as yet unexplained; see now G. Kroonen, ABäG 61(2006)xxx-xxx. Further removed is Lat. fundus `bottom etc.', with which MIr. bond, bonn `sole, basis' can be identical (IE * bhund(h)o-). The inner nasal is prob. connected with the nasalsuffix in * bhudh-no- and can be due to old metathesis, as corresponding forms appear also on Indo-Iran. territory, e.g. Av. bū̆na m. `ground, bottom' (from * bundna-?), Prākr. bundha- m. `bottom of a vase'; s. Mayrhofer s. budhnáḥ w. lit.; cf. also πύνδαξ (s.v.). -- Hypotheses in Bq and Ernout-Meillet s. fundus (after Vendryes MSL 18, 305 ff.); further rich lit. in W.-Hofmann s. fundus (WP. 2, 190, Pok. 174). On the meaning in gen. Kretschmer Glotta 22, 115ff. (against Porzig WuS 15, 112 f.); for Greek esp. Furumark Eranos 44, 45 ff. Though some details remain difficult, the reconstruction can hardly be doubted.
